How do i activate my verizon phone?

I have just bought a Verizon driod 2.2 phone and I broke my phone last week. There is an old phone in my phone that is not vacant and no one is using that phone. Is there any way that I can activate that phone and still use my old phone number? Please give me some best possible solutions for my problem?
