The BlackBerry Torch is an excellent example of a design well executed. Its slider-QWERTY design seemed like a gamble when the concept first leaked to the denizens of the web, but in reality it's the perfect combination of a number of popular functions, blended brilliantly by Research In Motion. The sliding mechanism, for example, is spot on, the screen slides smoothly and gets clicked into place at each end. When open, the screen doesn't shake in its tracks as you touch or type the screen, and the weight is so balanced you don't feel like the phone is toppling out of your grip as you write a message on the QWERTY keyboard.

The touchscreen is a huge step forward from RIM after the lukewarm reception that the company received after launching its Storm series of touchscreen products. The screen on the Torch has a completely different proposition; it's a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, features a portrait orientation and a HVGA pixel resolution.

A new system is build on the success of OS 5, so while you should not expect a big overhaul, be prepared to experience a number of excellent tweaks. The most noticeable difference between OS 5 and OS 6 is the new emphasis on illustrating the design of the piece.

One area of the phone's performance that surprised us was the quality of the 5-mega pixel camera. The Torch stands out as one of the fastest cameras we've seen on a smart phone — committing an average of about 200 ms between the shutter firing and processing. The LED flash is bright, and though our pics look a little washed out in regards to color, the focus is consistently sharp and the details are decent.
