Can i convert my cdma phone to GSM?

Basically I live in Kansas city and am having a Samsung Trill cell phone with Cricket wireless connection. But the fact of the matter is that since am using a Cdma service on my Cdma mobile there are many applications that I cannot use in spite of having a good phone. Almost majority of my friends use gsm cell phones and thus i find myself a little dizzy when discussing anything about cell phones. Also the variety of networks available on gsm platform are much larger than cdma. So i just wanted to know whether i can convert my cdma handset to a gsm one if possible.

You should be able to reuse the case, the display, the keyboard, much of the smartphone functionality like MP3 players, video cameras etc. You would not be able to reuse the antenna definitely. Since most manufacturers tend to manufacture multifunctional chips, you are likely to end up having to replace the chip and motherboard as well. May be it can be attempted as a costly hobby but wouldn't be wise if you plan to save some money by converting your old cdma phone to a gsm one. The main difference between GSM and CDMA is the use of SIM cards. GSM allows the user to remove this card and use it in virtually any phone that supports the GSM frequencies. GSM is an older technology, but it is considered to be the "global standard" for mobile phones. In theory, if you have a GSM phone, and travel to any country around the world, you should, at the bare minimum, be able to make/ receive phone calls and texts. CDMA phones, do not have sim cards that a user can remove and, on a global scale, are much less common than the GSM frequencies. One advantage of CDMA verses GSM is that if you are at a large event, lets say a public school graduation, and everyone is on their phones, CDMA has a higher capacity per area to handle phone calls. This would result in quicker connecting calls, in this situation. Those are the very basic differences that a typical end user will notice.
