How is the coverage of cingular phones?

I am planning to buy a cell phone maybe the next week. I am not sure. I am thinking of going with Verizon. But would like to consider Nextel & cingular. However, Cingular phones plans are more appropriate for me as they are cheaper almost $5 from all other service providers. I would appreciate if some one could tell me how well do cingular phones work in NYC Subways and inside buildings in NYC neighbourhood. Please post your personal views.
