iPhone incentive: Japanese users might get TV tuner add-on
Softbank is already in the news for offering built-in mobile TV receiver for the Samsung Omnia; here comes another stomper from the same firm, but this time for the iPhone. The local telecom corporation is offering a 1Seg TV tuner add-on for the iPhone 3G that will be area restricted, i.e. the application will be available in Japan only. No hidden fact that the iPhone isn’t as great a hit across the eastern coats as it is in the western countries, hence this could be a fruitful ruse, resulting in acceleration of the sales-rate of the handset across the region. Business talks apart, the add-on turns your iPhone into a mobile TV via WiFi once you attach the 1Seg/battery-pack to your iPhone through a dock connector. Slightly more compact than the iPhone, the device weighs around 80 grams and comes in dimensions of approx. 2x3.5x0.6 inches. The TV tuner that also works as an extended battery pack is likely go on sale for $100 [10,000 yen] from mid-December onwards, across Japan.
