Sony files patent for water and dust proof removable cellphone covers

Mobile phones go to hell when treated with water or dust (accidentally, I mean). Even a thought of my phone getting wet gives me shivers. Well, Sony Ericsson wants to take care of my worries (and yours too) as their new patent deals with removable cellphone covers which will be water, dust and sand resistant. Sony’s patent application mentions:

sony patent waterproof
sony patent waterproof

The present invention relates to a cover for a portable device comprising: a main body with resilient parts, an opening provided in a resilient part for insertion and removal of the portable device; and a cap shaped and configured to close the opening and to fit over at least a part of the resilient part surrounding the opening

It sounds quite normal and I don’t think that they should have patented it. It’d be stupid if other mobile companies have to pay them royalties for this. But, hopefully other companies will find an easy work around for providing water and dust resistant covers for their cellphones.

Maybe it sounds silly on Sony’s part to patent such a common technology (can I call it that?) but it’ll surely benefit users as other companies will also try to provide similar facility for their cellphones.
