How can I download Avi to DVD converter for free?

I am in the search of software that is capable of converting avi files to dvd format. Is the software I am talking about, available for free on the net? If yes, can anyone provide me with some download links so that I’m able to download this software and able to convert avi files into dvd format. Do I need to pay any amount for it? Anyone has any idea on this?

DivX whose name is an allusion to a U.S. distribution system for video DVDs called DIVX (Digital Video Express, 1998-2001) is, like Xvid or HDX4 an MPEG-4-compatiblevideo codec developed by DivX Inc. (formerly DivXNetworks, Inc.).The codec is known for its ability to large video files with goodquality can compress relatively strong.

DivX arisen 3.11 and earlier versions of the codecs by hacked Microsoft MPEG-4 codec, in 1998, this was by a French hacker named Jerome Rota extracted from a beta version of Windows Media Player been. The "Project Mayo" was born, where short time later joined by four other programmers. In the early versions of "DivX Player" it still graced the "Project Mayo" emblem, but was removed due to many questions from users later. The hack Microsoft modified the code to be able to store the compressed video not only as ASF file but also as an AVI file. Also supported the original Microsoft-only codec bit rates of up to 256 kbps; in the hacked version, however, there were up to 6,000. The company, founded by RotaDivXNetworks, Inc. later developed a completely new version in order to avoid patent infringement in the United States.DivXNetworks has filed a U.S. patent for the new codec.

DivX formats

A typical 100-minute long feature film on a DVD is six to eight gigabytes in size, with the DivX video compression, the film leaves on a CD-ROM (650 to 700 MB) store. The quality remains even when compared to MPEG-2 low bit 650-1000 kbit/s is relatively high, in scenes with a lot of movement may arise compression artifacts. With the advancement of the DivX codec repeated technical improvements have been achieved. Especially supported since version 4 multi-pass encoding with variable bitrate has contributed to this, is analyzed in which a first coding pass, the original file in the complexity of the successive frames. Only in one of the following runs (usually one) is the final video file is created. The advantage here is that with a constant memory footprint complex and fast moving scenes will be assigned a higher bit rate, while it is reduced in slow, quiet image sequences again.

Newer versions also support various MPEG method (MPEG-called tools), such as anamorphic encoding, and global motion compensation, resulting in approximately the same image quality in turn to a reduction of the storage space required. The success of DivX in the home has increased in recent years to the point that the codec is also supported by DVD players. Also have several digital cameras and mobile phones via a video-recording in DivX format.
To continue to consolidate in the home, the width of playback options further enhanced by the codec developed for use on other platforms. So there is the additional option of films in resource-and memory-saving formats for use on PDAs and handheld devices as well as for the demanding home cinema use in high-definition formats (High Definition Television) to compress.Films with high-resolution image, both require more power from the processor and more memory. However, the memory requirement is significantly below that of a comparable MPEG-2 movie.

Since version 7.0 also supports the DivX H.264 format, and the Matroska container, but only on a very simple knit conversion program called DivX Converter. Also brings DivX 7 with an H.264 decoder for Direct Show. The actual codec will continue to be delivered in version 6.9.2, without or without H.264 Matroska support. The DivX H.264 Encoder command line is currently available as a pre-release version of the "DivX Labs' Web site for download. Before the download is a free registration required .
