MIT students build DIY kit for creating wooden cellphone

Today people spend a lot of time with their phones, so it would be great if they could create their own, personalized cellphone. Now cellphone functionality has reached to stand against computers, but the basic tasks remain the same: making calls, sending text messages, saving contacts etc. In order to answer all these basic tasks, a team from MIT Media Lab has created a DIY cellphone kit. This product is in prototype phase and employs a wooden body. When it gets into production, it would be shipped with a circuit board, keypad, monochrome LCD screen and a big antenna.

The prototype work perfectly, can make and receive calls. This kit even has a caller ID feature. One essential thing that this kit does not is a rechargeable battery. The phone is powered by a 9V battery and every time you want to replace it, you would have to open the screws of wooden casing. The call capabilities are fine and it also has a SIM slot, so that you can chose carrier of your choice.

This Do-it-yourself cellphone kit would cost around $150. It is not a very functional device but gives you a feel of closeness since you made it. But we are still not sure if anyone would like this kit or not but it’s sure is innovation.
