How to maximize Android battery life?

I have LG Optimus V android phone. I am quite satisfied with the phone but one problem that is really annoying me these days is the battery life. One of my friends told me to charge the phone whenever phone is completely out of charge for better battery life. I did the same thing. But recently I am noticing that my phone loses it charge in a very quick span of time after completely charging it. I want to know from the people who are experts, about how can I improve Android battery life. Can anyone help? I would really appreciate your useful information regarding this. Thanks.

Charge your battery approximately for four hours before the initial use or until "Please Disconnect" message appears. The Vibrant just uses one lithium-ion battery, which does not even need to be fully discharged on a regular basis like the older nickel based battery types. Disable the automatic Brightness Adjustment which is located under settings, sound and the display and Brightness. Move your brightness slider all the way to your left and then remove your check beside Power on the Saving Mode or it will then continue to just adjust your brightness by just analyzing the current image. This feature will then periodically increase your brightness, so the screen will be readable under direct sunlight. The Vibrant's screen is very bright even when set to low, so this brightness option is not always necessary.
