The cellphone world or the technological world is slightly different from the real world. Here, the elder brothers arrive after the younger ones! That is the story of the Motorola Quench XT5 which can be considered the elder brother of the previously released XT3. As stated by the name, while the XT3 has a 3 MP camera, the XT5 has a 5 MP camera. Designed to exploit all the capabilities and fun embodied in Android 2.1, the XT5 showcases the designing heritage of Motorola and gifts people with an easier way to enjoy music, web browsing and messaging. The handset is high on the style quotient and is available for an economic price. Added to this are the exciting offers for the phone from Aircel.

Performance

Powered by the Qualcomm MSM7227 processor in the Android 2.1 Eclair, the handset was expected to perform a bit slower with no OS update in the horizon. However, the XT5 almost bewilders with its performance. Even with multi-touch, the touchscreen presents no lag and there is the slightest disturbance when heavy multi-tasking is on. Tilts and turns and quickly and accurately recognized by the accelerometer. The 5 MP camera is good and has sharp, rich images. No complaints when it comes to call quality. The battery provides more than 8 hours of continuous talktime which is simply marvelous.

Features

The XT5 is a 3G enabled smartphone which possesses a large 3.2 inches HVGA touchscreen. A trachball enabled 4-way navigation along with myriad connectivity options like GPRS, USB, EDGE , WI-Fi, Bluetooth and HSCSD make browsing a pleasure. There is an in-built accelerometer to enable auto-rotate of the UI and the proximity sensor for an auto turn-off. The zoom on the screen is enabled by simply pinching the screen> The other features include live Widgets, digital compass, GPS, photo editor, document viewer and preloaded Google Apps. The camera tags along with it a flash and zoom. The audio and video players are as good as the excellent stereo FM radio that the handset possesses.

Design

The sexy matte black finish with a daring dash of chrome along the rims gives a terrific oomph factor for the phone. The screen is glossy, however, and has been encased in scratch-resistant and smudge-proof Corning Gorilla glass. The four generic keys – search, home, back and menu – are touch sensitive and located below the screen. Motorola have also included the call answer and end button along with the roller trackball below these buttons. The flapped micro-USB port is located on the left side while the right side has the volume rocker. A 3.5 mm audio port and the power button are located on the top. The logo has lost its center position but is sure to be noticed better in its cool, new position! The phone feels solid though it does not look rugged. Being light and elegant, the designing of the phone is near perfect!

Bottomline

The way the XT5 behaves, one gets a feeling that Motorola has under-priced a wonderful phone! Available for just above Rs.9000, the handset definitely ‘quench’es the thirst of photographers, multimedia enthusiasts and texters alike! The high quality camera and features places the phone in league with HTC Wildfire and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 – both of which are priced at least 10 percent higher!
