What to do when iphone 3GS camera doesn't work?

Hi all. I am using iphone 3GS from quite a long time now. Recently I noticed a new problem in my iphone 3GS when I went for a party with my friends. My friend asked me to click his snap from my Iphone 3GS and a disaster happened as the lens was showing some grey color and I was not able to click any pic. It was showing all black. I cleaned a dust out of it but still no luck as I am shocked that why is it happening and even I am not able to see my saved pics now. Can some one tell me that why is it happening? Does my phone 3GS need some repair?
