How to solve issues related to psp updations?

I have heard that for upgrading your psp from 3.40 to 6.20 I have to go step by step instead of jumping directly to 6.20. I want to know if this is true where can I get the previous official firmware or can I download it directly from the psp or in what folder do I have to put it in? How do I put it in the psp through usb cable? Sorry for asking so many questions but I really need help and just one more what’s the difference between custom and official firmware. Which is better? Tell me a virus free and safe site for the software. Thank you.

This tutorial will teach you how to create and perform adowngrade (downgrade) of a PSP "normal". The downgradesare needed to run applications "homebrew" such as emulators or make homemade firmware loads on a PSP.Normally, Sony is responsible for closing all existing securityholes for loading unofficial software. However, this method is now possible to downgrade any PSP. It will also be possible to repair consoles updates Brika due to failures.
To do this, will have to change a battery on a PSP and create a "Memory Stick" special. This is only for PSP100X consoles(PSP "fat"). For the other consoles, used the method "Awakening of the cemetery." Once created, it will load the1.50 firmware for PSP (one of the first), which is known to bevulnerable to load firmware homebrew and homemade.

Although this tutorial does not provide anything new, it seemed necessary to have collected, in one tutorial, all the ways we "resurrect" a PSP that has suffered semibrick orpartial damage flash0 memory (for a total brick will also havesolution).

A total brick is completely damaged and Flash output toDespertar del Cementerio, unrecoverable.

A semibrick (or pseudobrick) occurs when, for one reason or another and always with the user as the protagonist, a file is not saved as flash0 should, but there are ways to recover theoriginal Flash. We have access to recovery menu.

We will explain the possible cases which may arise, to have alarge database with "grandmother's recipes" to leave the PSPlike new again.

We remind you that the recovery mode by holding it betweenthe R button, while turning the PSP. That if you should have itoff completely, not in Stand By.
